How to Deal with a Loud Garage Door
Short of calling a garage door specialist, what can you do about a loud garage door? There are a number of reasons why you may want to reduce garage door noise – you may work late, and not want to wake your family coming home, for example. When your garage door suddenly starts making a lot of noise, it may also be a symptom of a fault that will lead to bigger problems later. Today, we’re going to explore where the noise may be coming from, and what you can do about it.
What causes garage door noise and what can you do?
- Rollers getting jammed. Many people might not be aware that your garage door is supposed to roll along its tracks, not slide. If you have an older garage door, the rollers may be out of date – they can be replaced with newer, quieter nylon, or nylon-coated steel, and this should fix the problem. Nylon rollers tend to last longer too.
- Chain drives. Garage doors tend to either use a chain drive, or a rubber belt reinforced with steel. The former is older, and makes a lot more noise than the latter.
- Usually, the noise being made by a garage door component is amplified by the acoustics of the garage itself – vibrations can travel into the structure, so if your garage is connected to your house, this could be a major reason why the garage seems so loud from indoors.
What else can be done to make your garage door quieter?
- If you’d like to take a closer look at your garage door, you should do so with it closed. Once it is, feel free to examine it for loose nuts and bolts, apply lubrication to all metal components that touch other metal components, the hinges being particularly important. The absolute best thing you can do is consult any user manuals or guides supplied by your garage door’s installer – this is why it’s worth keeping them around.
Need more garage door help? Get a technician!
On the other hand, if you don’t have the time, a technician should be able to do all this for you. With that in mind, it could be time to update your garage door entirely – older doors are generally the main culprits for excessive noise, and it’s well known that un-insulated doors are louder than insulated ones.
